Poland has problem with water scarcity - it may seem like a joke, when the disasters and calamities: floods and rain storms happen so often. Surely our country is crossed by numerous rivers, we have a beautiful lakes, lots of rainy days in a year, but our water resources can be comparing with desert Egypt.
In Poland the amount of safe drinking water per inhabitant s lower than the European average. We are at the very end, in this index not just neighboring countries, but also hot Spain are ranked above Poland. It has to be admitted that these are the consequences of our actions.
Nature in the service to mankind
We dry the wetlands - swamps and bogs, change the course of rivers, use improperly floodplain areas, deforestation. All for our convenience and gain. Sadly, the strategy of demanding subordination of nature land us in deep trouble. Apparent convenience means simultaneously floods and ... lack of natural storage of freshwater. We let it drains away and evaporates, although we need more and more water.
Poles waste huge amounts of water. Only 3% of the consumed water is used to drink and cook, the rest disappears in drains as waste after washing or flushing toilets. Dripping tap and leaky cistern only complement the disaster.
Industry is not blameless. Do you know that to produce one bar of chocolate is needed more than 1,700 liters of water or to produce one pair of jeans nearly 10 thousand liters? The economy consumes huge amounts of water ranging from agriculture through manufacturing processes. When you throw away an article by the same token you waste the water used in production process.
Prices higher and higher
Applying the European Union's requirements requires building and modernizing numerous of sewage treatment plant and sanitation systems. Who if not us, average citizens, bear the economic consequences for these investments or perhaps eventual sanctions? Looking at the current prices of water and sewage: http://www.cena-wody.pl/ in some areas of Poland they are frightening!
The conflict between Israel and Palestine is known as the dispute related to cultural, religious and territorial problems, but it is heavily dependent on water resources. In some areas wars of the "blue gold" are very probable in the future. While we do not suffer so much from clean water scarcity, it is worth thinking about this precious substance in this context. Water - essential to survival - must be used carefully and treated as the most valuable good.
This substance is a prerequisite of our life and the whole ecosystem, so we must show a great deal of thrift in water consumption. Not only in view of our planet, but also wallets. Here are some examples of good practices:
- take a quick shower instead of a bath,
- while you brush your teeth turn off the tap,
- check for leaks, replace the worn seals, check for leaking toilet cistern,
- choose water-saving household appliances, eg. dishwasher, washing machine,
- use rainwater to water the garden,
- reduce your water demand, eg. save water during washing a car or while doing housework.
